Terezin - Prague 2008

Terezin-Praha_03.jpg, 20kBYet again arrived the month of May, the last among the many since the Allied Armies definitely routed the Nazi Germany. It brought liberation to the near-death-exhausted prisoners of the many concentration camps, including the ones interned in Terezin. After so many years of hopelessness, they could go home. We all know those stories, yet we remind ourselves every year and recall the ordeal of our loved ones.

Honouring the memories of the victims of the Plzeň transports

Rosenbaumovi.jpg, 76kBAn invitation to an assembly to honour the memories of the tortured victims of the Plzeň (Pilsen) transports, which is being organised by the Jewish Community of Plzeň in cooperation with the Federation of Jewish Communities of the Czech Republic.

The memorial ceremony will take place on Saturday, 19 January 2008 from 2 p.m. in front of the Great Synagogue in Plzeň (Sady pětatřicátníků 11) to mark the anniversary of the first transport of the Plzeň Jews to the Terezín concentration camp on 18 January 1942.

Our assembly will at the same time be a peaceful expression of the strong disagreement of a democratic public with all forms of extremism, neo-Nazism and anti-Semitic activities in the Czech Republic.

We invite all members of the public to join us in support of a free and tolerant society.

Assembly on the anniversary of Kristallnacht

Dear friends,
We would like to announce an assembly on the anniversary of Kristallnacht, which will also be a counter-demonstration against the march of neo-Nazis through Prague’s Jewish quarter.

The action on Saturday, 29 cheshvan (10 November 2007), will start at 13.30 in the park in Pařížská street next to the Old-New Synagogue. It will progress through Červená and Kaprova streets and onto Old Town Square. Our demonstration will be both a memorial to the victims of Kristallnacht in Germany in 1938 and a strong protest against the neo-Nazi march.

The neo-Nazis have a permit to march from 14.00 to 22.00 from Břehova street through Maiselova and U Starého hřbitova, back to Břehova and Maiselova and then through Široká, Žatecká and Platnéřská, finishing on Franz Kafka Square.

We have registered our counter-demonstration on a path as near as possible to the neo-Nazi march. We are determined, as we did in 2003, to block the neo-Nazis’ path and to prevent their provocative march through the Jewish quarter. As Goethe’s Faust said:

In the beginning was the Deed, not the Word.

We appeal to all of our friends, anti-fascists – Czech and foreign, Jewish and civic organisations, to come out on Saturday 10 November 2007 to support our action against the neo-Nazis.

Thank you for your understanding and assistance. Please spread the word of the counter-demonstration in any way you can.

Come to support us so that the neo-Nazis cannot march!
Council of the Jewish Liberal Union of the Czech Republic
